Interested in Authentic, Traditional Karate for the Mind, Body & Spirit? Contact us!
Are you looking for an authentic martial art with deep cultural roots? Located at 2026 Broadway, we’ve taught karate and self-defense in Kansas City since 1966. Practices are 6 to 8 pm Mondays and Thursdays and noon to 2 pm Saturdays.
The best way to see if we’re the right place for you is to visit us and watch or participate in a practice – come about 15 minutes early.
Today was a typical practice of junbi-undo, kihon, kata, and kumite except we took some photos so you’d have an idea about what our practice is like.
Junbi-undo means ‘warmup exercises’ – we didn’t photograph today’s warmup, so here are photos of warmups from previous events.
Kihon means ‘basics’ – here are some of our basic blocks, punches and kicks.
Kata means ‘forms’ – here are pix of several of the kata we practiced today.
Kumite means ‘sparring’ – here are a few pix of sparring from today’s practice.
Does this look like something you’d like to try (or get back into)? We’d love to practice with you!

Affordable Martial Arts
Because of our commitment to offer high-quality martial arts to the public, we have remained non-commercial. Monthly dojo dues are only $60 per month plus an annual fee of $125 ($250 for black belts) for membership in our parent organization, Shotokan Karate of America (SKA). There is no charge to test for any rank. This is a fraction of the what is charged by commercial schools.
A Sense of Duty
Our instructors are all SKA black belts with decades of training under their belts. They receive no compensation. They teach because they love practice and feel a deep sense of duty to pass what they’ve learned to the next generation.
Ranking
As a traditional karate organization, SKA has only three belt colors (white, brown, and black). Our highest level is 5th dan, the highest degree of black belt ever bestowed by Master Funakoshi. There is no charge to test for any rank.
Location
Practices are held at 2026 Broadway from 6 to 8 pm on Mondays and Thursdays and noon to 2 pm on Saturdays. You’re welcome to observe or join (more fun!) in any practice – park around back (parking is free – ignore the signs) and come in about 15 minutes before the scheduled start time (map & directions).
