Congratulations Paul Cepe! Paul was awarded shodan (1st degree black belt) last Sunday during dan testing at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph. The test was conducted by John Teramoto assisted by godans David Altman, Rob Clark, Bobby Bird, and Mike Lyon and observed by sandans and yodans following four grueling days of Midwest summer special training.
Paul pushed himself very hard throughout the special training.

This year, Paul was the only candidate for shodan during testing. The test consisted of ten repetitions of each of the five basic blocks, two punches, and six kicks. Then Paul was asked to perform the kata, Bassai. Paul had practiced Bassai well over 5,000 times over the years and his form showed that. Then he performed his favorite kata, Heian Nidan – also well practiced. Paul then had to face Mike Kostroske (nidan – 2nd degree black belt) in prearranged sparring.

After the test, SKA shihan John Teramoto spoke on behalf of all five godans (one yodan and three sandans) present: there is no question in any of our minds – you have clearly worked hard for many years without worrying about testing. Paul Cepe: Shodan!
