Kansas City black belts Mike Lyon, Carl Johnson, Takamasa Morita and Mike Kostroske were thrilled that five of their juniors participated in this kyu test and that they pushed themselves very hard throughout. A sixth member was unable to practice on Saturday and was tested the following Monday.

UNL Dojo leader David Altman led the practice and kyu test and gave a brief talk about our history and encouraged everyone to do their best. As usual, we first lined up in order of seniority, were seated and made a brief meditation. Then David led warmup and stretch (see Altman – Warmup).

Then we made our traditional pre-kyu-test practice of 480 basics plus 40 kata.

After we washed the floor, Mike Kostroske took our group photo (and many good shots during practice and kyu test).

A table and chairs were set up between the columns in the center of the dojo and candidates lined up and we bowed. The test was led by David Altman who was assisted by Mike Lyon and Carl Johnson. Nidan Greg Tunink and sandan Takamasa Morita led the juniors through basics, kata and kumite.

Seniors reached consensus on grading and David announced the results:

After kyu test we went to Lulu’s Thai Noodles, but David, Carl, Benja, Sigeppi, and Mike left early to visit Jon Beltram.
